What exactly is e-Aadhaar?

An e-Aadhaar is a digitally signed version of the physical Aadhaar issued by the Unique Identification Authorities of India (UIDAI) in accordance with the regulations of the Information Technology Act, 2000. With a digital signature, the Act enables the legal recognition of electronically transmitted documents. It’s password-protected and just as crucial as your Aadhar card. For security concerns, an e-Aadhar card password is an eight-letter word that is used to protect your online Aadhar card copy.

Note: An e-Aadhaar card is not a substitute for a real Aadhaar card because it functions similarly.

How to download an e-Aadhaar Card?

e-Aadhaar can be obtained from the UIDAI’s official website, the Aadhaar app, the DigiLocker app, or the UMANG app. You will notice that it is in the form of a PDF file once you have downloaded it. The PDF file is password-protected for maximum security. That is, you can only access it by providing the password associated with your Aadhar card.

Keep in mind the following:

    1. You are allowed to download the e-Aadhaar card as many times as you desire.
    2. Without the OTP, you won’t be able to download your Aadhaar card.
    3. For security reasons, the UIDAI sends an OTP to your registered mobile phone number.


  1. If your phone number isn’t registered with the UIDAI, you won’t be able to download an Aadhaar card.
  2. After downloading the Aadhaar card, you can only print it once. Only after you have entered the password and opened the PDF file.

There are two ways to get your e-Aadhaar card opened:

1) Type in the PIN code for the postal address you supplied.
2) Try typing the first four letters of your name in Capital and the year of your birth. Without Space.
